At a bus stop, I SAW ....a well dressed young gentleman seated in a wheelchair, engaged in conversation with an elderly lady while waiting for the bus. In the beginning, when I first saw this "odd" couple, I cannot help but felt sorry for the young man, handicapped at such a young age. At the same time, I pitied the elderly lady taking the bus on her own, unattended. However, as I drew closer, I noticed the young man's face beaming with sunshine, gesturing with his hands to express himself in an exciting conversation. On the other hand, the old lady was listening ever so attentively with a big smile across her wrinkled face.
What a beautiful picture!!
Within a short moment, a bus pulled up and left ........ without a trace of the couple ever being there.
What did I actually see?
As I tried to recapture the moments, it became obvious that my first instant reaction to physical disability and aging was proved wrong by these two people, whatever their background may be. Despite accidents and unhappy encounters, God still gives us enough reasons to be joyful, giving thanks to the many wonderful blessings (that we often take for granted) and the beauty of Creation, for the sake of mankind.
"Be thou my vision" we sang this morning; reminding us to see with the eyes of the Lord.
As well, be remembered that Jesus sees "everything" in us.
....Pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. (Matt 6:7)
"I saw you when you were still under the fig tree.", replied Jesus. (John 1:48)
