How do you feel about being part of a church that is full of liars and hypocrites?Would you feel awfully uncomfortable being lied to left, right, and centre constantly? Came across this of late. Wonder what you think?
The "NorthRidge is for Liars" campaign Southeast Michigan Church Stirs Controversy with Self-Incriminating Ad CampaignCampaign raises question: Can a church open to imperfect people attract members?
NorthRidge Church is raising questions and eyebrows throughout southeast Michigan with an outdoor advertising campaign launched last month. The campaign, titled "NorthRidge is For Liars," features billboards and transit ads that make bold statements about the openness of the church to people who aren't perfect. The ads direct people to beliefbeyond.com where visitors can get the story behind the controversial statements and the church.
"We've heard from people who've said they couldn't be part of a church that is full of liars, losers and hypocrites," said NorthRidge Senior Pastor Brad Powell, referring to the statements made in the series of three ads: NorthRidge is for Liars, NorthRidge is for Losers, and NorthRidge is for Hypocrites.
Powell and members of the NorthRidge staff have been responding to the flood of calls and emails, saying this is just the kind of response they expected, even hoped for from the irreverent campaign.
"If people tell me they're put off or embarrassed, the first question I ask them is, 'why?' The fact that a church is open to flawed individuals is an attractive truth. It's a truth that allows ALL of us to be part of a church—not because we're perfect or 'better-than-thou'—but simply because we want to follow Christ," explained Powell.
Powell sent an email to all NorthRidge members prior to the launch of the campaign to prepare them for the potential challenges they'd face from friends and colleagues who see the ads.
"We're going to be blitzing our area with a new campaign to get people thinking in new ways about church in general and NorthRidge in particular," the email explained. "We're doing it by communicating the truth about who NorthRidge Church is really for: liars, hypocrites and losers. The church is supposed to be a place where all can come and find forgiveness, acceptance, and hope in Christ."
While some have found it difficult to explain, many members have contacted Powell to say the campaign has given them a starting point for discussions about the church."I saw this billboard today and was touched that we would be this welcoming," wrote one member. "I had a coworker with me, and I had the honor of explaining the sign. [I said] that we are all flawed, and God doesn't expect you to get your act together before we come to Him. He will take you just as you are." But for those who are still uncomfortable with the campaign, Powell has a challenge."I'd challenge them to rethink what they're looking for in a church," concludes Powell. "NorthRidge is for normal, flawed, broken people. It's a place, unlike most think of church, where we don't pretend to be something we're not, where we don't judge other people for who they are by nature. It's a place where we are all on the same level as we seek to discover and get to know God and His power to use and transform our failures for His glory.
"While this is the first major marketing campaign for the church, the approach is not new for NorthRidge or for Powell, who is also the author of Change Your Church for Good."We've always presented ourselves in somewhat irreverent ways," explains Powell. "In fact, my book draws on the NorthRidge congregation's experience of shaking up a stagnant body of believers and restoring life and joy to a church that was dying. You don't do that by playing it safe.
"The "NorthRidge is for Liars" campaign will run on billboards, buses, mall displays and online through early November in the Plymouth, Northville, Ann Arbor, Saline, Brighton and Howell areas. More information about the campaign is available at beliefbeyond.com.
NorthRidge Church was founded in 1921 and is a Christian community dedicated to meeting the needs of people where they are in life. Through its congregations in Plymouth/Northville, Ann Arbor/Saline and Brighton/Howell, the church seeks to be a center for discovering, developing in and experiencing Christ.

I’d like to hear your feedbacks!

P.S. Incidentally, don’t bother going into www.beliefbeyond.com, it’s no longer available. The campaign was held a couple of years back by the way.

On hypocrisy (Net search)
ReplyDeleteThe dictionary definition of hypocrisy [1] is:
1. a pretense of having a virtuous character, moral or religious beliefs or principles, etc., that one does not really possess.
2. a pretense of having some desirable or publicly approved attitude.
3. an act or instance of hypocrisy.
So, a religious hypocrite is, by definition, a non-believer, since he is only pretending to be an adherent of the faith. A hypocrite is not a person who commits some sins on occasion (all people commit sin occasionally), but someone who practices those sins on a routine basis. The truth of the matter is that hypocrisy has been a problem for those who claim to follow God for a very long time. In fact, God challenged Cain (the first son born of Adam and Eve) on his hypocrisy when he submitted an inferior offering to Him.[2]
So, what did Jesus say about hypocrisy and hypocrites?
By far, of all preachers and prophets of the Bible, Jesus had the most to say about hypocrisy and hypocrites. Since He didn't mince any words on the subject, but directly confronted the religious hypocrites of His day (the scribes and Pharisees), they hated Him intensely - eventually having Him arrested on trumped up charges. Here is a list of some of the hypocrisy that Jesus spoke against:
• Giving to the poor to be recognized by others[3]
• Praying in public to be recognized as "God's man"[4]
• Letting everybody know you are fasting to get recognition by others[5]
• Complaining about other's behavior when yours is even worse.[6]
• Pretending to honor God through lip service only[7]
• Testing other people to try to make yourself look superior[8]
• Deceiving people from knowing God[9]
• Repressing the poor and widows[10]
• Teaching proselytes to be hypocrites[11]
• Tithing (giving to the church), but neglecting justice and mercy[12]
• Doing everything for show, while really being self-indulgent and unrighteous[13]
• Treating stock animals better than fellow human beings[14]
• Being able to analyze the weather, but unable to distinguish between right and wrong[15]
Jesus indicated that those who practiced hypocrisy would be sent to hell,[16] indicating that they were really non-believers. In other books of the New Testament, the writers associate hypocrisy with such things as evil,[17] lying,[18] perverting the gospel,[19] envy, gossip and slander,[20] and jealousy and selfish ambition.[21] James contrasts the evil of hypocrisy with the "wisdom from above," which is characterized as being "pure, peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering."[21]
Modern day hypocrites
The news media loves to make a big deal when a "Christian" preacher commits some sort of sexual sin, with the most recent example being Ted Haggard, who rabidly preached against homosexual practice, while he himself was involved in it on a routine basis. Everybody loves to hate a hypocrite. It is not surprising that there are hypocrites today, as there were in Jesus' day. The Old Testament prophet Daniel even predicted that there would be more hypocrites in the end times, as the cost of faith could well be your life.[22] Jesus also predicted that many would fall away[23] although they would claim to be His disciple at the judgment:
"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.' " (Matthew 7:21-23)
In the Sermon on the Mount of Olives, Jesus talked a lot about people who were hypocrites. In fact, the topic of hypocrisy took up a major amount of Jesus' preaching. So, why is it that those who claim to follow Him are so often hypocritical?

[2]Cain and Abel (his younger brother) brought offerings to God. However, God did not have regard for Cain's offering, since it was inferior in some way: "If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it." (Genesis 4:7) So, Cain was being a hypocrite by pretending to love God by bringing an offering to Him. However, Cain was probably just trying to keep up with his brother, whom he murdered after God called him on his hypocrisy.

You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye. (Luke 6:42)
