Offerings
Growing up in a Christian family, my limited understanding of offerings included:
A. Teachings from the O.T.:
"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house." Malachi 3:10.
B. Teachings from the N.T.:
- "All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had to live on." Luke 21:4
- "Then give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's." Luke 20:25
- "Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful
giver." 2Cor 9:7
C. Sunday Service:
- "All things come from thee, O Lord; and of thy own have we given thee."
- Offertory hymn #403... "Take my life, and let it be" (奉獻全生歌).
D. Advice from Christian friends:
- "I budget my offerings beforehand from every pay cheque, rather than whatever loose change I can scramble from my
pocket on Sundays."
- "My daughter's offering cheque each week is "tithing" down to the exact penny. Over the years, she had learnt that as a discipline on spending in accordance to God's Will."
- "Tithing to me is not just about money (where tax receipts come into play), but rather giving of your time, love and abilities to the honour of our Lord."
Yesterday in a sermon, I heard the most profound statement about offering ..... "Give until it hurts!!!"
What comes to your mind each week when you put in your offerings to church? Would you care to share your thoughts?

Our pastor also talked about giving until it hurts. Unfortunately, for some, it hurts very soon.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the sharing and encouragement.
One guideline is tithing of whatever we report to IRS as our earning.
