Why go to church?
Many years ago, I had this inclination that I didn’t need to go to church to be close to God.
When we go to church on Sunday, it is mainly to attend the worship service. But worship should be done on a daily basis not just on Sunday. The breaking of bread is to remember Christ’s death, His resurrection and His second coming, I always hold on to this hope everyday. Furthermore, I can get lots of good sermons on TV or on the Internet. So why bother to go to church?
However when I came across these Bible verses in Hebrew 10:24-25. It had changed my mind.
Heb 10:24-25 “Let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.”
1. Worship should not be the only or primary reason to go to church.
2. Your involvement and commitment in church will lead to the level of intimacy that stimulates fellow believers ‘TO LOVE AND GOOD DEEDS.”
3. And in the church setting (when believers meet) we can encourage one another in good times and bad times.
4. We are accountable to each other so that we remain faithful to our Lord the rest of our lives.
Therefore we should go to church to be involved, encouraged and most of all to be accountable to each other. Just remember Prov 13:20 “He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.”
“Let’s not forsake our own assembling together.”

So what should we do when we go to Church and get discouraged and frustrated by others in Church and lose our peace of mind?

Dear Matilda,
ReplyDeleteI feel deeply for you. You are not alone. Many of us have the same feelings about SMSL. I don’t have answers, but would like to share…
“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of our need.” (Hebrew 4:15)
I find comfort in the recordings of Jesus cleaning out the temple because it had been “turned into a market”. God is just. He does not miss anything, even our thoughts. Therefore on judgment day, we would be held accountable for our actions.
His disciples remembered that it is written:
“Zeal for your house will consume me.” (John 2:17)
“我為你的殿心裏焦急, 如同火燒.”

A blessing has come upon us with the crisis in which we find ourselves. I say there is a "blessing" because of the comments on my comment, with which I am somewhat touched and encouraged by Baby Finger and Albert who strive to comfort and guide me - this is a fellowship that should not be broken because of what is happening at SMSL today - rather, it should be a fellowship which forms the foundation of a stronger (perhaps "re-newed" church)? It would be such a pity if everyone went on a different path due to the disintegration of SMSL which appears to be impending and hardly avoidable. The only remedy at this time is to stick together, pray together, listen together, and look up together to catch that illusive breath of "fresh" air.
ReplyDeleteThank you both, Baby Finger and Albert for caring.
